Elon Musk, the person who started X (formerly known as Twitter), has introduced XMail, a new email service that wants to compete with Gmail, which is very popular.

Musk talked about this on X, saying that XMail is coming soon, but he didn’t give many details about what it will be like, when it will start, or how much it will cost. He did mention that it will work together with the X app.

There was a bit of a scare when someone spread a rumor that Gmail would stop working, but Google quickly said it wasn’t true. They also said they’ve recently made some updates to Gmail to make it even better.

Musk has big plans for X, wanting to turn it into an “everything app” and even introducing other things like XPay and XTube. However, some experts think XMail might face some challenges along the way.

When Is Xmail Coming?

Of course, in true Musk fashion, those two words say both a lot and nothing at all simultaneously. His response is a case of throwing an idea out there and seeing what the response from the masses is. I didn’t reach out to X to see if it would provide any further information as one person can only tolerate so many poop emojis in response.

Xmail Already Exists

You may have spotted that I’ve referred to the supposed email service in development as Musk’s Xmail throughout. There’s a reason for this and it represents one of the biggest hurdles Musk faces: several email services already exist by the name of Xmail. A quick search on Google reveals at least three using the Xmail name. It could well be that if Musk is planning such a new service he has already taken this into account, and I imagine he has the funds to be able to purchase the right to use the name.

Personally, I doubt that we will be seeing an email service from Musk any time soon. Even if the Musk Xmail service does emerge, the notion of taking on Google’s Gmail with any real impact, given Gmail has around 2 billion accounts currently, is a stretch, to say the least.

After Musk posted the news, a fake email message to Gmail users went viral on X last week claiming that the email service would be closing down on August 1. The realistic-looking screenshot with the headline “Google is sunsetting Gmail” sent shock waves across X with many worried that the service would no longer support “sending, receiving, or storing emails,” as the message stated in a Forbes report.

Unfortunately, not many details about the XMail email service are available yet. Also, the release date is uncertain. However, there is a chance that XMail may be a part of the X app.
